Orvis Helios Rod Repair // Is it as Good as They Claim?
Переглядів 2,4 тис.14 днів тому
I recently broke the tip on my Helios D series rod... totally my fault per the usual rod breakages. Orvis claims that you can get a tip replaced in 5 days.... is it true? The rod itself was outstanding right up until the point I got stupid and broke it. Again... my fault. The newest Orvis Helios is light, crisp, fast and a helluva straight casting rod. If you trust Orvis this should be on your ...

Sage Arbor XL Reel // Not NEW... Just Great.

I've been using this reel for quite some time, it's very similar in design to the well know Sage ESN Reel that features a full frame and weights for balance. I love the geometry, sound, and it's been extremely reliable. Great for the active angler who wants a slim profile and a super fast rate of retrieve. Neat pants. My dude maybe needs a pedicure before he starts slinging these videos on onlyfans thoug.
Great pants …. Not talking politics … I speak of only religion …. That way I can’t get taxed …. Unlike our lord and savior Donald Jesus Trump …. Who is always taxed after date night with his beautiful daughter . Amen ..🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🥲
Thanks for the great and informative video! The ads on top of the captions are so annoying!!!! Not going to consider buying it just for that reason alone 😢
G’morning Joe. It’s been a while since commenting on your permit and Patagonia videos. Good fitting wading pants, great topic and a tough task. Simms is a name that I pay attention to for my outdoor equipment. Please keep a lookout for a good product with the convertible type with the zip off legs, I think lots of people like them too. Keep those rods bent and the camera rolling!
My local shop tells me they are the best on this.
I'm so confused about how to wade with these boots during winter. If the water is in the 40s let's say and weather is upper 30s, how do I wear Korkers wading boots and keep my feet dry in cold weather? I have a wet suit pants and vest that i want to use in winter with Korkers wading boots. Do I find waterproof socks for winter? I know the boot will bring water in, and I assume I shouldn't be wet wading in winter.. 2nd question, I hear the soles can come off when in use on the Korkers. How often or how likely am I tobhave sole issues with Korkers? I fish in Tennessee rivers near Smokys where there are large slimy rocks, so I need something not to slip and just ordered a pair of Korkers for myself and a pair for my wife. What am I missing here?
Hi Stan, good question! Sounds like you are ready for some cold weather fishing. I would get a set of traditional waders and pair those up with your boots. redsflyfishing.com/collections/wading As far as the soles coming off, I lose about (1) per year with hundreds+ days of wading.
@@redsflyshop Thanks so much for answering both questions so completely and kindly. Appreciate you very much sir!
*err
How do you do this in a small river with 245 flow with rock base and vegetation? I am new to fly fishing and am trying to Learn.
Well I think that river is about 245 ish, similar, when you say vegetation are you talking about weeds and such in the water?
Those pants are huge. Look like a tent.
Yea I accidentally grabbed a set of 38-40's. I'm 5'9 175 and wear the 34".
These pants are a favorite for our lord and savior…. Donald J Trump …. “ J “ for Jesus …. Let us all kneel and praise our new messiah .. I love the pants because they are so flexible which aides when grabbing kitty …. TRUMP 2024 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
Hilarious
I hate when people put political BS on fishing sights!!
I have no idea what he just said. I'm not sure he does either.
seems bright
I was not talking politics… I speak only of religion…. Mostly because I won’t get taxed . 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
I wish they would make this line in a 4wt for my hoppers and hopper dropper rig
It's funny you mention that, I actually just learned this only comes in 5/6 as I wanted to do the exact same thing! I'll mention this to RIO. I just put fresh lines on both my 5 and 6 weight R8 rods.
What weight is the split shot? I have a fly rig, but also two spinning reel rigs for trout. So if the drop shot is heavy enough, you can probably tie the fly on a spinning rod because youll have the weight of the drop shot and will allow you to cast in one swing instead of whipping a weight around over your head lol.
Yes when you break it down, the indicator is simply part of the line. Mend it right! ahah.
Thank you. perhaps the most complete tutorial on fly casting that I have seen.
Glad it was helpful!
Do you run 7.5 ft leaders with this setup to help load the rod in close with the creek line?
Great question, yes, short leaders are a huge advantage for the short game. I like 7.5' maximum, great question!
@@redsflyshop thanks for the reply, I have the 0wt dart and had been trying to make a 12-15ft dry fly leader work with no luck. I’ll try the short leaders and see how it goes.
So you would not take the Arbor XL on a bone fishing trip?
For a Bonefish exclusive absolutely, I like the reel and the drag is great but if I may overlap into Permit or am in a destination where a 10 lb. fish or a Trevally is possible I think I would like a little more backing.
We cannot call it a bobber like the peasants do.
How do the violet mirrors compare to the smith guide low light ChromaPop yellow lens? Do you prefer these over the rose mirror?
I haven't had that lens, I'm sure they are nearly as bright. I do know that many of our guides have jumped into the Violet Mirror and are loving it. Never heard them get excited about any other lens before so I think it's pretty damn good.
Absolutely awesome Spey series, I’ve learned so much, Thank you
Glad to hear it! Thank you for watching.
what do you suggest for flats fishing for tarpon and bones ? bright light
I'm wearing the Green Copper Mirro Costa Saltbreak, really like it. I'm about to get the equivalent in Bajio just to try 'em out.
Great video and excellent tutorial! All of your techniques will work with jack crevalle too. Thanks for taking the time while you're on such a great trip!
Thanks for watching! Really appreciate it. Good luck to you!
Considering A New Hopper Dropper Rig!! What Wt Would You Recommend In That Model. I Was Thinking 4-5 Thanks
I would definitely go #5 in this rod if you are thinking the Hopper/Dropper game. Just the line weight alone will turn over better and make your more accurate. It's such a fine and light rod already.
I’m trying to decide between the lumbar and sling. I do want to run the water bottle on my pack. The lumber seems to be more ergonomic on where it attaches to the waist belt. But I agree about the bed in your face. Have you attached the water bottle holder on the sling? I can’t find any pictures of people doing that on line
I've run the water bottle holder on the Lumbar, didn't like it after a while. I was using a Yeti metal bottle and it was too sloppy. If you haven't bought yet.... I would get the sling. I have both and tend to reach for the sling more and more often. I think maybe if you put the water bottle holder on the sling and used a Nalgene or something light that would work better.
great video! how would you adjust the sighter and tippet lengths for a small stream?
I’m using echo shadow 2 in 10’ 3wt.
If I'm fishing 3' of water I'm going to run about 3' of tippet and keep that sighter tight to the water but not "in" the water all that often. As far as tippet size, I run 5 and 5.5X almost exclusively. I'll go to 6X for small flies, but not that often. Does this help?
This channel is a gem
Thank you!!!! Really appreciate the watch and hopefully the subscribe.

Great video! Would love to try this style of fishing on lakes. Looked like you were using a short leader to get those beetles in those tight pockets. Were you using a standard 7.5ft taper leader for this or a custom leader?
Wonder if they seen Joe @ redsflyshop and went dam better get this one out asap lol Kidding aside nothing but good things to say about Orvis , orderd a pair of waders up to B.C. , never showed I called in 5 days another pair showed up Next day the missing ones show ( Canada post 🙄 ) Called Orvis they said np keep the other pair as a spare Insane service !
Oh holy smokes! what service!
Like the keep it simple style, fly fishers do tend to over complicate fishing which discourages other from getting into the sport 😊
Thanks so much, yes, we anglers can complicate things far too much sometimes!
I have been doing this lately. Didnt know it was an actual technique lol. I just always try to put my flies in front of my indicator through mending.
amazing permit! 👏
Thank you!
Hi can you pee in these by just putting down the chest portion similar to zip waders? Thanks
Ha yea but not by much. Peeing uphill ain't easy hahahaha. If you unclip the waist belt it's easier.
Those are wet flies! Streamers start at 4”.
So do dwarfs!
My first Helios was the Zero Gravity, in the 865. This used to be their flagship fly rod. But, they weren’t treated that way after the H2 and H3 came out, even though the warranty was the same. Mine broke, second section past the tip. Sent in for warranty repair (in 2022). Got it back in a couple months, they did not follow their protocol. I wanted to keep the undamaged tip section, which they claimed could be done. They were supposed to make a new section to replace the second section that broke, but Orvis also replaced the entire tip section too. The result, was a rod with 2 new sections and an awful poor quality tip top guide that wasn’t anywhere close to the quality of the original, it is very thin wire with lots of line friction (not appropriate for a rod with a stiff tip). My main reason for repair was that it had a hook keeper, which you can’t get on an Orvis fly rod any more. I am stuck with what was a top quality rod, that now has a cheap replacement tip top guide that decreases the quality of the fishing experience. I complained, to no avail. Done with Orvis, end of story.
Great feedback. There are some con's to the system whereas Sage for instant will build an exact fit for an older rod even years and years after that particular rod was DQ'd. For the amount I fish I don't break many rods, and always have a few spares so for me personally it's neither a "pro" or a "con".
I thought I didn’t need to watch this video. I am now glad that I did 😂
Thanks Dan! Appreciate the nice comment.
Hey Joe , you know that streamer that you lost? It’s on your upper lip. You’re welcome.
Yeah, I reckon they're awesome. I live in Australia and getting stuff repaired down here is near impossible. My 3 yr old Hydros II died in a big way landing a very large trout, jammed and I pulled the line out and the springs in the drag pulled through and self-destructed. I mailed it back to Orvis for repair, it arrived back in Oz 10 days later, good as new, repaired and mailed free of charge. Awesome service. They really do seem like an ethical company, committed to what they do. Also love that they are a family committed to the environment that has made them so successful.
That's a clean snap, looks like it got nicked. The carbon walls are getting so thin on these high end rods, any little thing will cause them to break. I'm sure they are getting a lot of claims. I think the Helios and R8 are in the upper limits of how light someone would want to go before they're not fishing.
I broke the tip on my 10 6 3 weight H3 last Saturday. Ordered the tip Sunday. It arrived in 4 days. I am super happy with the rod, Orvis custom service, and the warranty program. I already had an Orvis account and had registered the rod so it took about 3 minutes to order the tip.
Great to hear.
How long should my sink tip be ? If I have a 11 or 12 foot 3-5 wt rod and as you said a 12-15ft shooting head? So it’s not too long and too heavy ?
Sink tips for that rod should be 10-12', but no shorter. You could even run a sink tip as long as 15'. Great question!
Broke the tip on my 955 blackout. Called them on Monday had the replacement tip on Thursday. 4 days! Pretty hard to justify the other brands and all the bs you have to deal with if you happen to break their product. Orvis has a happy customer here in North Idaho.
I somehow smashed my bottom eye on my H3. I didn't even have to send it back. I gave my s/n $50.00 and it was at my door in 3 days. Best warranty in fly fishing.
Who's the Limp Bizkit groupie giving fishing advice? 😂
Ok that's pretty damn funny. Keep 'em coming!
Nice video
Thanks, appreciate the watch and comment. Good luck out there.
Did you really bring a white board to the river and take +12 minutes to explain a basic two nymph rig?
I'm not sure I would call some of this basic, you're assuming everyone has your knowledge.
Thanks for the video (and all of your videos). Also been in your shop and hired a guide for the day… you guys are awesome. Anyways, I recently bought a 3weight g loomis 11’11” trout Spey rod as I’m wanting to learn Spey fishing here in central Oregon. The guy at my local fly shop set me up w a #4 rio integrated in touch trout Spey line (which I believe is a scandi style line?) and a Rio light 10ft MOW float tip. I’m having second thoughts on my purchase after reviewing a lot of your Spey videos and I’m wondering if (1) I’m limiting myself w this line overall, since it is not interchangeable and (2) does this mow too even make sense adding to the end of the integrated fly line? Also is the #4 ok for a 3 weight? Thanks in advance.
That is a good line, but that sink tip is on the heavy side for that line. That tip at 80 grains (T-8 x 10') is a bit sluggy for that line so if your casting is more challenging than you expected that could be the reason. You might do better with some Versileaders from RIO and a smaller fly. The "Trout Spey" line from RIO is excellent but not designed to cast soggy weighted flies and heavier sink tips such as you have. It will do it, but requires more effort. I like that line, just limits your sink tip and fly size.
@@redsflyshop thanks for your response, I haven't used the rig yet.. still need to study your casting lessons video a couple more times before I get in the river! The MOW tip I thought was floating line but regardless it sounds like it might be on the heavier side. I'll give it a shot though and see how it goes
Awesome video! Great information well presented. I hesitate to use jig hooks in general primarily because of their propensity to brain fish. Especially the smaller ones. Your thoughts? Best!
I'm glad you asked, that's a serious consideration but I have not seen that, even once. These are very light wire short shank hooks. Not a like a "crappie jig" profile. They are all quite delicate. 90% of the time it's in the upper lip, no blood no foul. I fish that river in the background A LOT and am extremely protective of the trout health here and have found that these smaller more modern streamer hooks are much kinder on the trout.
Another great video Joe! I love running jig streamers on a tight line rig! I hope you do that New Zealand setup for jig streamers? Thanks
Thanks for watching Sean, I think the tight line rig with small streamers is one of the most misunderstood and underappreciated facets in fly. Great to hear others are doing this as well.
The soccer mom looks pretty fishy with the gray squirrel. I've been tying everything on a #10 Hanak dry; it's a great thin wire hook. Wish they made a #8 dry, because I prefer larger hook gaps. Firehole makes an #8 dry but the wire isn't as thin; however, it's pretty close. I end up going a few hook sizes up, and bring the body to the hook point instead of the bend of the hook.
Great intel here thanks for sharing, the light wire hooks of today are outstanding. Super penetration, slick and barbless. As fish friendly as it gets considering we are hookin' em haha.
Love you man. But your ID is ...well, crooked flat bill hat and mustachio... I've gone through my own. Find you! As for the vids, phenomenal! You guys are awesome. I love the details and info. Thank you!
Ha good stuff. Thanks for the watch and share.
The crooked wasn’t intentional! I had to keep taking my sunglasses off to help Eric with camera settings. Almost shot it again but the darn talk was over 20 minutes long. 😂
Special Agent Joe with another banger.
Just wanna say reds fly shop is the best. Staff is unbelievably knowledgeable and eager to help. I bought a defective opst commando smooth and the salesman remembered my face from the week before and replaced it free of charge . Can’t say enough about the team at reds.
Thanks so much! We appreciate the support and positive vibes. Fish on!
Another great video! Thank you. Question: Why do you run a tandem rig when fishing under an indicator, but a point and tag dropper when tight-lining? Wouldn't the tag work just as well or better under an indicator?
Good question! Typically I am fishing my rig suspended in the column with an indicator so the function of an “anchor” fly doesn’t apply. I have done this under and indicator and will fish a “tag” rig but only when running deep and allowing my heavy fit to tap bottom.
@@redsflyshop Gotcha. Thanks for the quick reply and all of the information you share!
